The Expected Costs of Managing An Artist

You can run but you can't hide. That's right, to make money you have to spend money.  Most people may have an idea of what the costs are when it comes to artist management, but how much can you really expect to dish out to get your artist out there and what are you paying for?  A few expenses you can be sure you'll be taking care of is distribution, promotion, publishing, etc. you can find a good example of this here.  Of course the prices can vary depending on location, connections, and artist popularity.  A publicist along can cost anywhere from $600 to $4,000 a month depending on quality.  Then you have promotion photo shoots, videos, and radio time.  According to this website they can do promotional photos for your band for as low as $200 and as high as $375.  Touring costs are usually unpredictable to an extent, because you have to take into account the distance, food, fuel, type of transportation, sleeping arrangements, as well as many other things.  This  isn't meant to scare you off, because there is still money to be made and these are of course estimates like I said prices can vary and you may not be tagged with all of these expenses.  It is important that you have a good idea of what expenses you may incur, so you aren't taken off guard when it's too late. To keep things in perspective before signing on to manage any artist take a look at what resources you already have available to you.  Do you have connections with any photographers or videographers, etc.? Any labels you are close with? Is it worth it for the artist to travel across country or international?  You may find it best to keep your market small, or you may have to connections and tools to make a decent profit but only you know that for sure.  Financing is a huge component to management in any field, artist management is no exception.  I hope this blog is helpful in preparing you for what financial responsibilities you may come across.
